Wisconsin gaming compact suit still unresolved

Friday, November 5, 2004

The Wisconsin Supreme Court is again being asked to resolve a gaming compact lawsuit.

The owners of a racetrack filed the suit against compacts signed by Gov. Jim Doyle (D). The track says the compacts allow Class III games that have been banned by the state constitution.

The state Supreme Court heard the case but deadlocked on a ruling. Then, the court ruled on a lawsuit Republicans filed against the compacts and found that Doyle exceeded his authority.

The racetracks owners are selling the property to the Menominee Nation, which plans to turn it into a Class III casino. Voters in Kenosha County approved the casino in a non-binding referendum on Tuesday.
