Pawlenty says urban tribal casino not a priority

Wednesday, December 8, 2004

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) said on Tuesday that he won't back an urban casino for three tribes unless he first renegotiates compacts with other tribes.

Pawlenty is demanding $350 million a year from tribes with casinos. If the tribes don't agree, he says he will open the state to non-Indian gaming.

The Red Lake, White Earth and Leech Lake Ojibwe tribes want to open a casino in the Twin Cities area. They are willing to share revenues with the state but Pawlenty said renegotiation of existing deals is his first priority.
