BIA blamed for delaying Oklahoma gaming pacts

Monday, January 24, 2005

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is being blamed for delaying final approval of the new Oklahoma tribal-state gaming compact.

The Cherokee Nation was planning to offer Class III card games this past weekend. But the BIA hasn't published the agreements in the Federal Register, so they are still not legal.

The compact authorized the expansion of tribal casinos in exchange for revenue-sharing with the state. Proceeds are to go to public education.
