Connecticut tribes go off reservation for gaming

Monday, April 11, 2005

Connecticut's two federally recognized tribes have had immense success with gaming. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe own the two largest casinos in the world.

The tribes are now hoping to replicate their success beyond their reservation borders. Both are making bids for gaming in other states and helping tribes in other states.

The Mashantucket Tribe is competing for a slot machine license in Pennsylvania and has entered into gaming-related deals with tribes in California and Arizona. Other deals with tribes are in the works.

The Mohegan Tribe is also moving into Pennsylvania with the purchase of a racetrack. The tribe has deals with tribes in Washington and Wisconsin.
