Eastern Shawnee Tribe defends Ohio land claim

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

Representatives of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma defended the tribe's claim to millions of acres in Ohio.

A consultant said a 1795 treaty reserved the right to hunt, fish and gather in certain areas of Ohio. Additionally, the treaty sets aside 145 square miles for the tribe, a lawyer said.

The tribe hasn't filed the claim but sent documentation to state attorney general Jim Petro in hopes of meeting to discuss it. The tribe is willing to settle for a gaming compact, the representatives said. Several sites across Ohio are being considered.
