Maine governor says he will veto tribal slots bill
Friday, June 3, 2005
Maine Gov. John E. Baldacci (D) plans to veto a bill that would allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to open a race track with slot machines.
Baldacci promised the veto after the measure gained final approval in the House and near final approval in the Senate. The racino is limited to the Passamaquoddy Tribe but profits from the slot machines would be distributed to Maine's three other tribes.
State voters legalized slot machines at the polls last November while rejected a full-fledged casino for the Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation.
