Republicans: Tribes lack credibility on gaming

Wednesday, June 8, 2005

"But with all due respect to the tribal governments that operate Minnesota's 18 casinos, their anti-expansion arguments are getting a little stale. Since federal law authorized tribal casinos in 1988, gambling in Minnesota has expanded far beyond anyone's expectations for two reasons -- Minnesotans enjoy gambling, and tribal governments will add as many casinos and slot machines as are necessary to meet the demand.

Today, there are more than 21,000 slot machines in Minnesota, and the demand for more will continue well into the future. Think about this -- since the first racino bill was introduced in 1997, the number of slot machines in Minnesota has increased by at least 50 percent. And all the while, the tribal spokespeople have accused racino supporters of wanting to expand gambling."
