Maine governor firm on veto of tribal slots bill

Wednesday, June 8, 2005

Maine Gov. John Baldacci (D) met with Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribal leaders for two hours on Tuesday but didn't change his mind about a tribal slot machine bill.

Baldacci still plans to veto the measure. It would allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to open a racetrack with slot machines. Revenues will be distributed among the state's tribes.

Tribal leaders hope Baldacci will change his mind. They say the racino will create jobs and generate revenue in an economically depressed area.
