Chehalis Tribe sees success thanks to casino
Monday, June 13, 2005
The past 10 years have been good to the Chehalis Tribe of Washington thanks to a successful casino.
The Lucky Eagle Casino didn't start turning a profit until 1999, four years after it opened. But now it has become the basis of the tribe's burgeoning economy.
Of the gaming revenues that come in, 85 percent are reinvested in economic development on the reservation. The tribe owns a gas station, construction company and hotel.
Gaming revenues have also been used to pay for college tuition and build a health clinic and police station. Tribal members also receive a share of the profits.
