Four Michigan tribes announce Detroit-area casino

Tuesday, June 28, 2005

Four Michigan tribes announced plans for a casino in the Detroit area on Monday.

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, the Hannahville Indian Community, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians plan to locate the casino near the airport in Romulus. A specific site hasn't been chosen.

The tribes are hoping to make good on a 1994 agreement signed with then-governor John Engler that allows a casino partnership among seven tribes. The Bay Mills Indian Community, the Saginaw Chippewa Indians and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians aren't part of the Romulus announcement however.

Word of the deal was first made public by the Sault Tribe Times, an independent website [Link ] about the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe, which has proposed a Romulus casino.
