Most Wisconsin tribes make compact payments

Friday, July 1, 2005

Most of Wisconsin's 11 gaming tribes made their compact payments to the state on Thursday but withheld payments totaling $103 million.

The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe didn't pay $43.6 million. The tribe wants its losses covered if the Menominee Nation wins approval for an off-reservation casino, the tribe's attorney general said.

The Ho-Chunk Nation didn't pay $40 million. The tribe is already in arbitration with the state over the compact.

Of the other tribes, the Oneida Nation paid $20 million. The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans paid $1.4 million.
