The Hannahville Indian Community of Michigan announced plans on Thursday for a non-reservation casino in a Detroit suburb.
The tribe is proposing a casino and hotel on 25 acres in Romulus. The site is near the Detroit Metro Airport. The Hannahville reservation is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, about 450 miles away. The tribe is submitting an application to have the land taken into trust under the off-reservation section of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. If the Bureau of Indian Affairs agrees, the state governor would have to concur. The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe opposes the idea because the land is Ojibwe territory, a spokesperson said.
