The Quechan Nation may sue the state of California to gain approval for a new casino.
The tribe operates small casinos on both the California and Arizona sides of its reservation. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) negotiated a compact for a third, larger casino but the deal failed to win approval by state lawmakers after it ran into opposition from other gaming tribes. The Quechans now want to invoke a "most favored tribe" clause in the compact it signed with former Gov. Gray Davis in 1999. The clause allows the tribe to request a new compact based on more favorable terms allowed for any other tribe. The state is required to agree if the clause is invoked. Get the Story:
