South Dakota Senate passes gaming compact bill

Thursday, February 9, 2006

The South Dakota Senate passed SB167, a bill that requires legislative approval of all tribal-state gaming compacts.

Under the bill, the state governor would continue to negotiate compacts. But any agreement that expands gaming or changes the location of a gaming site would need separate legislation action.

Gov. Mike Rounds (R), Indian lawmakers and tribal leaders oppose the measure. They say it will hurt the compact negotiation process.
