Nebraska tribes take another shot at Class III gaming

Tuesday, February 14, 2006

Three Nebraska tribes have renewed their campaign to legalize all forms of Class III gaming in the state.

The Winnebago Tribe, the Santee Sioux Tribe and the Omaha Tribe are backing a petition to place the gaming issue on the November ballot. They filed the wording of the question with the Nebraska Secretary of State last week.

State law currently outlaws slot machines and table games. The Interior Department, acting on a federal judge's decision, has determined that some forms of Class III games are permissible in the state.

The tribes, as well as non-Indian gaming interests, have sought to legalize Class III gaming in recent years but the efforts have failed.
