Slot machine bill in Massachusetts killed

Thursday, April 6, 2006

The Massachusetts House of Representatives voted 100-55 against a bill to legalize slot machines in the state.

If the bill passed, it would allow the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe to offer Class III gaming. It would also lead to gaming for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, whose federal recognition is due to be finalized in March 2007.

The Senate had approved the slot machine bill overwhelmingly last fall but Gov. Mitt Romney (R) said he would veto it.
