City opposes bill to shut down Lytton Band casino

Thursday, June 8, 2006

The city of San Pablo wrote Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) to oppose her bill that would shut down the casino owned by the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians.

The city said the tribe did not engage in reservation shopping when it acquired 9.5 acres in San Pablo under a special act of Congress. The law allowed the tribe to open a casino without going through Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

S.113 would require the tribe to submit to the Section 20 process. In the meantime, the tribe won't be able to engage in gaming, a move that spells disaster for San Pablo's finances, the city said.

The tribe is operating Class II machines at the site and is generating more revenues than expected. The city is on track to receive about $12 million a year from the casino.
