Law firm sued for failed Mohawk casino deal

Friday, November 17, 2006

The Dorsey & Whitney law firm is being sued in federal court for malpractice over a failed casino deal.

The firm served as outside counsel for a Minnesota investment bank that helped secure a $28 million financing deal for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe's casino. But the deal was never approved by the National Indian Gaming Commission.

The tribe said the lack of approval meant it wasn't liable to the investors, who sued Dorsey & Whitney when the deal collapsed. The firm could owe up to $4 million for its role in what one judge called an "embarrasing situation."
