A bus carrying patrons from the casino owned by the Torres-Martinez Band of Desert Cahuilla Indians was involved in a fatal crash on Sunday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 13 people died and 31 were injured when the bus collided into the back of a big rig. The incident occurred on Interstate 10 near Palm Springs.
"I wish to express my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives or were injured in this tragic collision," Commissioner Joseph A. Farrow said in a statement.
The bus was returning from the Red Earth Casino. It was not operated by the tribe or by the casino but by USA Holiday out of Los Angeles, according to the Highway Patrol.
