The Wilton Rancheria of California hosted a meeting on Wednesday to update the local community about its casino plans.
The tribe envisions a $400 million to $500 million facility on a 35-acre site in Elk Grove. The resort project would include a 302-room hotel, an event center and a gaming floor with up to 2,000 slot machines.
"Elk Grove is the most environmentally friendly, has the infrastructure already in place,” Chairman Raymond Hitchcock told the crowd of about 300, KCRA reported. “It's slated for commercial development. It already has the traffic component already inside -- it's ready to go."
The site is located next to an outlet mall under construction and it's already been identified as an option in the environmental impact
statement that's being reviewed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The land would need to be placed in trust and the tribe would need to negotiate a Class III gaming compact with the state to move forward with the casino.
The tribe was restored to federal recognition in 2009.
