Prairie Island Indian Community isn't planning for new casino

The Prairie Island Indian Community of Minnesota just celebrated a $19 million casino expansion project but isn't planning to build an off-reservation facility, President Shelley Buck said.

Buck confirmed to The St. Paul Pioneer Press that the tribe paid $4.4 million for 112 acres in West Lakeland Township, about 30 miles from the reservation. While plans are up in the air, gaming isn't on the table.

“I can’t speculate what is going to go there,” Buck told the paper. “Our plan is not to put a casino there. The state would not allow us to put one there.”

Buck said the acquisition fits in with the tribe's diversification efforts.
