The Oneida Nation sued the New York Gaming Commission on Tuesday in hopes of blocking a new commercial casino.
The commission awarded a license to the $425 million Lago Resort and Casino last month. The facility would be located on the edge of the tribe's exclusivity zone, an issue that is raised in the lawsuit.
"When the Oneida Indian Nation and a majority of New Yorkers supported the measure to expand gaming, we supported a very clear law -- one that mandated a review formula requiring new gaming facilities to prove they will create new jobs, rather than simply cannibalizing local economies," the tribe said in a statement. "That new law did not empower the Gaming Commission to create an arbitrary make-it-up-as-you go licensing process that allows commissioners to change their review criteria on a whim."
The Lago casino in Tyre is about 76 miles from the tribe's Turning Stone Resort Casino
in Verona and about 63 miles from the new Yellow Brick Road
Casino in Chittenango.
