Pokagon Band aims to build police station at Indiana casino site

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians plans to build a police sub-station at the site of its proposed casino in Indiana.

The facility would be located on the northern portion of the tribe's 166-acre land-into-trust site in South Bend. The design is still being developed but it would not include a detention component.

"In all honesty, I think I am free to say that we would like to start construction on it sometime this year," Police Chief William Lux said at a planning meeting on Wednesday, WSBT reported. The city's board of zoning appeals recommended approval of the structure, the station reported.

The tribe plans a $500 million casino, hotel and other development at the site. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is working on the environmental impact statement for the project.
