Site identified as potential location for tribal casino in Connecticut

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe have received five bids for a potential new casino in Connecticut and the location of one site was disclosed for the first time on Tuesday.

Centerplan Companies is offering a 30-acre property in the town of East Windsor, according to news reports. The site lies near a major highway that leads to Massachusetts, where a $950 million commercial is under construction in downtown Springfield.

“There’s not much there now,” First Selectmen Robert Maynard said at a town meeting, The Journal Inquirer reported. “A lot of it is just vacant field.”

The tribes plan to select a host community sometime this year. They will then ask the Connecticut Legislature to approve the actual casino, which they see as a way counteract competition from the one being built by MGM Resorts International in Springfield.

Other bids came from East Hartford, Hartford and Windsor Locks, whose officials submitted two sites for consideration.
