Nooksack Tribe shuts down one casino amid financial concerns

>
The Nooksack Tribe of Washington shut down one of its gaming facilities last Thursday, putting more than 100 people out of work.

The Nooksack River Casino in Deming was facing financial and legal problems. In May, a judge in Washington ordered the tribe to pay $20.7 million plus interest for failing to live up to an agreement with a loan servicing company.

“It is a tough call for them, as it employed a lot of Nooksack citizens. But it was just a simple business decision,” Ron Allen, the chairman of the Washington Indian Gaming Association, told The Seattle Times. The tribe itself hasn't commented on the shutdown.

The tribe's other facility, Nooksack Northwood Casino, remains open for business.
