The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal
Nation and the Mohegan
Tribe are delaying a decision on a location for a potential new casino.
The tribes planned to select a host community by Tuesday. But they said they needed more time and did not set a new deadline for a decision.
“We continue to do our due diligence, evaluating proposals and the economic impact of each site," the tribes said in a statement, The New London Day reported. "We are mindful that towns have their own processes to work through, and we want to give them the ability to do that effectively. As we've said from the beginning, we want to be in a community that wants and values everything that we will bring with this investment.”
Through their joint venture MMCT, the tribes received five proposals from four communities. The goal is to counteract competition from a non-Indian casino that's under construction in neighboring Massachusetts.
MGM Resorts International is spending $950 million on the casino in downtown Springfield, just a few miles across the state line. The facility isn't expected to open until September 2018 at the earliest.
The tribes, meanwhile, have said they can open a new casino in a shorter time frame. They would still need approval from the Connecticut Legislature for the facility.
