The Kaw Nation of Oklahoma is celebrating the expansion of its off-reservation casino near the Kansas border.
The SouthWind Casino in Braman now features two buildings -- a smoke-free casino and a smoking one. The new smoke-free building offers 275 games, table games and a cafe and bar in a 10,000 square-foot space.
The tribe is also working on the third phase of the project. Plans call for a larger casino to open in a couple of years.
The facility is located on land that was placed in trust under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act. The Kaw Nation is the first and only tribe in Oklahoma to complete both steps of the process.
The 21-acre site also houses the Kanza Travel Plaza. It's located near the closest exit on Interstate 35 to the Kansas border.
The tribe also operates a casino in Newkirk, Oklahoma.
