The
Picayune Rancheria of the
Chukchansi Indians in California reached a new agreement that could help lead to the reopening of its shuttered casino.
The deal restores $1 million in annual payments that were promised to Madera County under an existing agreement. The tribe also will pay for law enforcement and fire protection at the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino.
"We have worked tirelessly with the tribe and the county to reach a fair and equitable arrangement," Christian Goode, the chief operating officer of the casino, said in a press release prior to a meeting between the two sides on Wednesday morning.
The county approved the agreement at the meeting, The Fresno Bee reported.
The tribe was forced to close the casino on October 9, 2014, due to a leadership dispute on the reservation. The tribe has held elections for a new council in hopes of resolving the issue but not every faction has accepted the results.
