Seneca Nation grows land holdings at off-reservation casino

The Seneca Nation has expanded land holdings around its off-reservation casino in Niagara Falls, New York.

The tribe acquired several properties worth more than $3.2 million, The Niagara Gazette reported. But the tribe said there are no plans to expand the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino.

“It’s nothing more than legal transactions and is not tied to any potential developments,” Phil Pantano, a spokesperson for the Seneca Gaming Corporation, told the paper. The corporation owned the properties at issue and transferred them to the tribe, the paper reported.

The tribe opened the casino in connection with the Seneca Nation Settlement Act of 1990. The land is held in "restricted fee" status under the terms of the law.

The tribe is spending $40 million to expand the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino, its off-reservation facility in Buffalo. The land there also was acquired in connection with the land claim.
