Keweenaw Bay Indian Community weighs casino expansion plans

Leaders of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community in Michigan are considering casino expansion and renovation plans.

The tribe could build an entirely new Ojibwa Casino in Baraga, The Houghton Daily Mining Gazette reported. Plans would include a new hotel, the paper said.

The tribe is also looking at renovating the Ojibwa Casino in Marquette, the paper said. Both recommendations were contained in a marketing study commissioned earlier this year.

Tribal members, though, have been reluctant to support expansion projects after the governor rejected a proposed off-reservation casino in 2013. The tribe was going to close the Marquette facility and open in another location.

Last December, members voted down a plan to close the Baraga casino a build a new facility at a different site.
