Non-Indian facility in Massachusetts sees $18.1M in revenues

A non-Indian facility pulled in $18.1 million in gross gaming revenues in July, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported on Monday.

July was the first full month of operation for the Plainridge Park Casino, which offers slot machines and electronic table games. Gamblers poured nearly $181.6 million into those devices that month and the facility paid out about 90 percent of the "coin in," the commission said.

"It is anticipated that Plainridge Park Casino will generate approximately $200 million of gross gaming revenues in the first full year of operations, which would translate to approximately $98 million in revenues to the commonwealth," the commission said on its website.

Plainridge is located less than 20 miles from the city of Taunton, where the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe wants to build the First Light Resort and Casino. The tribe questioned the facility's license but was rebuffed by the attorney general's office before it opened in June.

The tribe is still waiting on the Bureau of Indian Affairs to make a decision on the land-into-trust application for its project. The final environmental impact statement was published last September but there's no timeline for action.
