The Picayune Rancheria of the
Chukchansi Indians remains hopeful that it will reopen its casino next month.
The Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino shut down last October due to a leadership dispute on the reservation. Talks with the state and the National Indian Gaming Commission to resolve the matter continue.
“It will be September for sure," an optimistic Christian Goode, who serves as chief operating officer for the casino, told The Fresno Bee.
The closure of the facility put about 1,000 people out of work. About an equal number are expected to return once the casino reopens, the paper reported.
“A lot of the employees are the same ones coming back,” Chairman Reggie Lewis told the paper.
As part of its efforts, the tribe reached a deal with the labor union Unite Here, which represents about 700 casino employees, to address salary, benefits and other issues.
