The Los Coyotes
Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians has gained a prominent supporter for its proposed off-reservation casino in Barstow, California.
Rep. Paul Cook (R-California), a member of the House
Subcommittee on Indian, Insular, and Alaska Native Affairs, wants the Bureau of Indian Affairs to make a decision on the casino.
The final environmental impact
statement was completed more than a year ago.
"My goal is to get the casino,” Cook, who is serving his second term in office, told The Desert Dispatch. "Barstow needs jobs.”
Cook said he may ask the Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), the chairman of the subcommittee, to call a hearing in hopes spurring action on the proposal.
