Eastern Cherokees on track to debut new casino in September

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina will open its second gaming facility next month.

An exact date hasn't been determined. But the $110 million Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino and Hotel is on schedule and on budget.

“Obviously there’s always little hiccups in construction, in the projects, but for the most part everything is going to schedule and going to plan,” general manager Lumpy Lambert told The Smoky Mountain News.

The 125,000 square-foot facility will feature a 50,000 square-foot gaming floor with 1,050 slot machines and 70 tables. There's also a seven-story hotel with 301 rooms.

The tribe already operates the Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort. Cherokee Valley River is about an hour away, just outside the town of Murphy.

Harrah's Cherokee employs about 2,500 people. The new facility will put about 900 people to work.
