A new Class III gaming compact in New Mexico is being sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for review.
The Navajo Nation, the Jicarilla Apache Nation,
the Mescalero Apache
Nation, Acoma Pueblo
and Jemez Pueblo officially signed the
agreement Gov. Susana Martinez
(R) on Monday. The 22-year deal includes provisions affecting revenue sharing, free play,
operating hours and gaming on newly acquired lands.
"This is a historic day for the Navajo Nation," President Ben Shelly said in a press release. "Gov. Martinez’s approval of the tribal gaming compact with the state of New Mexico brings us one step closer toward securing our economic future for the next 22 years,”
The Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act gives the BIA 45 days to take action on a compact.
