Idaho Senate passes bill to ban bets on historical horse races

The Idaho Senate voted 25 to 9 to pass a bill that outlaws bets on historical horse races.

In 2013, lawmakers authorized betting on previously-run races. But the electronic devices that have been installed at non-Indian facilities have drawn controversy because they resemble slot machines.

Senate Bill 1011 now awaits action in the House. If it passes and is signed into law, about 250 historical horse racing devices will have to be removed from play, The Coeur D'Alene Press reported.

The Coeur d'Alene Tribe, the Kootenai Tribe, the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes support the effort to outlaw the machines.
