Wisconsin newspaper supports Menominee Nation in its efforts to get Gov. Scott Walker (R) to change his mind on the tribe's off-reservation casino:
The Menominee, who have worked for more than a decade to put an off-reservation casino in Kenosha, said they have been assured by the Bureau of Indian Affairs that the agency will accept another decision from Walker if it comes before the Feb. 19 deadline.
The BIA approved the project in August 2013. That started a one-year clock for the governor to accept or deny it. Before that period ended, Walker requested and received a six-month extension on the time to make a decision.
Then, nearly a month before the deadline, the governor announced his rejection of the project, and said objections by the Potawatomi tribe, which operates a casino in Milwaukee, created too many risks for the state.
The Menominee, who tried to provide assurances to the state that any losses to state gaming revenue from other tribal gambling operations would be more than made up by revenue from a Kenosha casino, are trying to get the governor to change his mind.
