Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe acquires land adjacent to casino site

The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts has acquired 17 acres adjacent to its proposed gaming site.

The tribe paid $1.1 million for eight parcels, The Martha's Vineyard Times reported. Chairman Tobias Vanderhoop said a land-into-trust application will be submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

However, Vanderhoop wouldn't say whether or not the land will be used for a Class II gaming project that's being litigated in federal court. A hearing takes place on Friday.

“Planning for the proposed gaming project is handled by the Aquinnah Wampanoag Gaming Corporation. At this time, the tribal council has not designated a specific use for the lands at 4 State Road," Vanderhoop told the Times, referred to the location of the new property.
