Fines for foes of Tohono O'odham Nation off-reservation casino

Two groups that are fighting the Tohono O'odham Nation were fined $75,000 for violating campaign finance laws, The Arizona Republic reported.

Respect the Promise [Post-General Election Report] and Neighbors for a Better Glendale [Post-General Election Report] failed to report donations or expenditures of $10,000 or more, the paper said. The Gila River Indian Community contributed $157,471 to the Neighbors group but it wasn't clear if the tribe's involvement was the cause of the violations.

The Tohono O'odham Nation broke ground on the $500 million West Valley Resort last month. A temporary structure is expected to open in November 2015.

Opponents failed to stop the project in the courts and in Congress. The House passed H.R.1410, the Keep the Promise Act, but the Senate failed to take action on the bill or on its companion, S.2670.
