Resident claims the local community doesn't support the Catawba Nation off-reservation casino in North Carolina even though the nearest city and business leaders welcome it:
A casino is no different than organized crime like the mafia. Even the crime lords or crime families created jobs, whether they were strong arms, murderers, prostitutes, gaming bosses, waiters and waitresses or chauffeurs. In general, the mafia took care of those working for them, until they no longer needed them. They, like a casino, got their money through trickery and deceit.
The only real difference is that the mafia was never government approved, at least not in writing. They did however build or buy hotels, amusement parks, casinos and even churches. They did it with others money. They cheated on taxes, yet they had to pay for utilities so they were, by today’s standards, “good” citizens, all on ill-gotten money.
I was personally told by a representative of the Eastern Division of the Bureau of Indian Affairs that he had never known an Indian tribe to try and bring casino gambling where the city and county didn’t welcome it. I told that representative by phone that is exactly what is happening with the application for land trust in Kings Mountain for the Catawbas.
