The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is looking at sites for a third casino.
President Bryan Brewer said the casino could be located on the northern part of the Pine Ridge Reservation. The tribe currently operates the Prairie Wind Casino on the western side and the
East Wind Casino on the eastern side.
The expansion would come under a new Class III gaming compact with the state.
The agreement authorizes 750 slot machines, up from the 250 in the current agreement.
"This would open up the door for us to expand gaming," Brewer told KEVN-TV. "Right now, we could use a few more machines here, but this would give us the opportunity to look at opening up another casino."
The South Dakota Gaming Commission held a public hearing on the compact yesterday. If it's approved at the state level, it will be sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for review.
in June, tribe and the state signed an extension
of the existing compact. The extension expires December 31 unless a new compact
is approved.
