The Santa Ynez Band of
Chumash Indians in California will only use labor unions for its $160 million casino expansion.
The tribe plans to add a 12-story hotel with 215 rooms to the Chumash Casino Resort. There will also be more gaming space, new food and beverage venues and a parking garage.
“The hotel and casino expansion is one of the tribe’s most significant construction projects in more than a decade,” Chairman Vincent Armenta said in a press release. “We are committed to providing hundreds of construction jobs to union workers and working with local businesses through every step of construction.”
The project has been controversial within the local community. The tribe has completed an environmental evaluation but the state is asking for a more thorough analysis.
