A federal judge has dismissed charges against two men who were accused of operating a casino that was not authorized by the St.
Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York
Anthony Laughing Sr. and James Gray were among five men indicted in connection with the Three Feathers Casino. Three other defendants were acquitted after a trial but federal prosecutors continued to pursue Laughing.
However, they asked Judge Thomas J. McAvoy to dismiss the charges "in the interest of justice," The Watertown Daily Times reported. Laughing suffers from undisclosed health issues and his attorney said he wouldn't have been able to sit through another trial.
Laughing's first trial ended in a mistrial. Gray, on the other hand, was never apprehended.
The Three Feathers Casino opened in July 2011 and was shut down by federal authorities in September 2012.
