The Bishop Paiute Tribe of California appears to be moving forward with a casino expansion project against the wishes of its membership.

Last July, tribal members vote 287 to 258 against pursuing an $118 million expansion of the Paiute Palace Casino. But the tribe is moving to take over a land assignment adjacent to the facility.

"Today's protest centered on the fact that the Tribal Council disregarded a General Council vote of NO by authorizing the Bishop Paiute Development Corporation to assume construction of casino expansion and a hotel," the group SaveNorthPaHa said on Facebook, explaining the reasons for a protest at the site on Monday.

Tribal leaders declined to comment on the plans for the land, The Sierra Wave reported.
