The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut continues to pursue gaming options beyond its home state.
The tribe is bidding on a commercial casino near Boston, Massachusetts. and is interested in one in the Catskills region of New York. The tribe is also looking at a jai-alai facilty in Miami, Florida, and is part of a group that's bidding on a commercial casino in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “We have to take care of their tribe membership and the benefits they are able to get, and they are not shrinking,” Mitchell Etess, the CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, told the Associated Press. “If you just were to stay here, you would not have an increasing amount of revenue.” The tribe opened the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, a commercial facility, in northeastern Pennsylvania in 2006. The tribe also manages the Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In addition to commercial projects, the Mohegans are helping the Cowlitz Tribe of Washington pursue a casino.
