The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin faces a long wait for an off-reservation casino.
The tribe has local support for the $132 million casino in Shullsburg. But the plan depends on approval from Bureau of Indian Affairs, a process that takes years to complete. And even if the BIA approves, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act gives the state governor veto approval, a step that can add another year to the process. The casino was previously rejected by the Bush administration in January 2008 under a guidance memo that made it nearly impossible for any tribe to open an off-reservation casino.
