The board of commissioners in Dakota County, Nebraska, voted to support a Class III facility for the
Winnebago Tribe.
The tribe plans to spend $40 million to convert a former racetrack into a casino and events center. The project depends on the legalization of casino-style gaming in the state.
“Every state around us has some form of gaming,” Lance Morgan, a tribal member who serves as president and CEO of Ho-Chunk Inc., the tribe's
economic development corporation, told Dakota County Star. “It’s ridiculous to think, even being here on the border, that we don’t have a form of gaming. It’s about $400 million a year in terms of tax dollars that are leaking across the border.”
Casino-style gaming is legal in Iowa and South Dakota but Nebraska has resisted.
