United Keetoowah Band casino remains closed after 27 years

Monday, November 25, 2013

It looks like the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians of Oklahoma won't be ending 2013 on a good note.

The tribe was forced to close the Keetoowah Cherokee Casino on August 30 after 27 years in business. The facility is located within the former Cherokee Reservation but the land isn't held in trust or in restricted status.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs was prepared to place the land in trust until the Cherokee Nation went to court. The Cherokees have made offers to reopen the casino but the UKBs haven't accepted the terms of the discussions.
