The Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribe of Massachusetts launched its casino bid shortly after winning federal recognition in May 2007.
Six years later, the tribe is still working on the project. But there appears to be progress -- the state Legislature on Tuesday gave final approval to a Class III gaming compact that will be sent to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for review.
The Indian
Gaming Regulatory Act gives the BIA 45 days to review a compact.
Assuming that the agreement reaches Washington, D.C., in the next couple of weeks, a decision will come in early January 2014.
The tribe is also waiting for action on its land-into-trust application for its casino site.
The BIA originally promised a decision this spring but its appears a decision won't come until early 2014.
