The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians will move forward with an off-reservation casino in hopes of convincing Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) to support the project.
The tribe wants to build a $100 million resort on 233 acres in Fruitport Township. The project requires an amendment to the existing Class III gaming compact but Snyder has balked at the idea. However, he said he might change his mind once he reviews the economic data, environmental studies and other information as part of the land-into-trust process. The tribe will be submitting an application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. “Our tribe is excited about the potential of our proposed resort to help the people of the Muskegon area and Fruitport in particular ... an area hard hit by economic challenges over recent years,” tribal council speaker Virg Johnson told MLive.
